Le nouvel an est une fête d'origine païenne qui vit le jour vers 46 avant notre ère, sous l'impulsion de Jules César qui décida que le 1er janvier serait le Jour de l'An. Les Romains dédiaient ce jour à Janus, dieu païen des portes et des commencements. Le mois de janvier doit son nom à Janus, qui avait deux visages : l'un vers l'avant, l'autre vers l'arrière. Gregorian calendars. Here a calendar year refers to the order in which
the months are displayed, January to December. The first day of the medieval
Julian year was usually a day other than January 1. This day was adopted
as the first day of the Julian year by some European countries between
1522 and 1579 (that is, before the creation of the Gregorian calendar

American colonies) did not adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1752. This
change can lead to dating confusion between Old Style and New Style dates.
The Gregorian calendar as promulgated in 1582 did not specify that January
1 was to be either New Year's Day or the first day of its numbered year.
Although England began its numbered year on March 25 (Lady Day) between
the thirteenth century and 1752, January 1 was called New Year's Day,
which was a holiday when gifts were exchanged. Bien que les jours de l'an tombent rarement à la même date d'un calendrier à l'autre, on remarque une relative concordance entre ceux des pays tempérés. En effet, ce qui fut interprété comme la « disparition » de la végétation durant l'hiver et sa renaissance au printemps a alimenté le mythe très répandu de la renaissance cyclique de l'année. C'est ainsi qu'un grand nombre de jours de l'an sont fêtés entre le solstice d'hiver et l'équinoxe de printemps. Cependant, ceci n'est nullement universel, notamment dans les pays tropicaux, où le cycle des saisons est bien moins tangible. On peut citer en exemple l'Égypte antique, qui (bien qu'elle utilisait un calendrier civil solaire) fêtait la nouvelle année à l'arrivée annuelle de la crue du Nil. Cette crue étant due aux pluies ayant lieu loin en amont (dans les hauts plateaux), sa date était entièrement tributaire de phénomènes météorologiques. Cependant, elle intervenait généralement à la même période.
